Aladdin’s magic lamp, an enchanted rose, a a glass slipper that should have disappeared at midnight, a spindle of a spinning wheel, or a poison apple. For better or worse these magical items were ordinary objects until someone extraordinary touched them. A genie, an enchantress, a fairy godmother, an evil queen, and a sea witch. These extraordinary people gave these small things great power. And with what should have been ordinary words, when these words were linked together, their stories created an extraordinary impact on so many generations.
I’ve realized over the years that it’s in these simple moments, or with these ordinary items, that the most powerful magic occurs.
Take this book for instance:
My friend gave this to me for my 30th birthday. Seems like a normal, even thoughtful, gift for a writer. And it is. But because it came from my friend, it’s SO much more than that.
She took the time out of her day to look at this book, purchase it, inscribe it, wrap it, and hand deliver it to me. That time, that effort, (and the most magical part) that energy was now imbued into every single leaf of paper inside its binding. Every page feels like it’s glowing. And not just cuz the edges are edged in gold!
You’re probably wondering what it is I’m getting at. “Books, fairytales, sea witches, magic, this b*tch has lost her mind.” I can feel it as you read. And you’re right, I have lost my mind. But that’s not for this post.
What I’m trying to say is that would could have just an ordinary gift, turned into this crazy magic I get look at and use every day. Simply because my friend gave it to me. And she is far from ordinary. She embodies pure magic. She is magic because she wakes up every day with a grateful heart, a willingness to brave her fears, to shine her light on everyone she encounters. So when she decided to gift me an ordinary journal, it became what she is. It became magic.
What I’m saying is take moments out of your day to infect those around you with YOUR magic. I’m saying SEE the magic in the ordinary objects around you, draw from them to find your own magic.
Don’t look at a pen and see just a pen, see a tool to leave someone a note and bring them joy. Don’t look at a list of bills to pay and just see less money in your pocket, look at them and see you helping someone else feed their family with the job they have providing you a service. Don’t look at the people you work with and just see people you share an office with, see them as your merry band of men (or women) and together find a way to be your own Robin Hood or at the very least imagine them in tights and laugh about it! (Can’t be all nice all the time, let’s be real!)
In all seriousness my point is find the magic in your every day. Discover your own power. Take the energy that you naturally give off and make it vibrate even MORE. Be an enchantress, be a genie, hell be a sea witch if you want to. Just find your magic and share it. Find the magic around you and harness it. Find the magic in your misadventures; trust me it’s so much fun.
Oh and my friend? Her name is Christina and I’m so grateful for the journal she gave me and the magic she is ✨ This is her:
