Flowing

My last workout was on March 14, a last minute decision on my way to Salem before the chaos ensued. It wasn’t my best workout, it wasn’t my fastest, and truth be told I couldn’t really breath for most of it. The breathing thing definitely had some other contributing factors which will make their way to a later post I’m sure, but needless to say I didn’t know that workout would be my last in studio workout for a while.

Since we’ve been in this twilight zone we now call life, I just haven’t had the motivation, the desire, or the mental capacity to do any of the amazing at home workouts my company, or others, have put out there. This morning I realized, I’ve been looking at this yoga mat for going on a third week. I’ve gained some weight, my abs are pretty non-existent, and I’m pretty sure I can recite every Harry Potter movie verbatim. I had been getting real down on myself about it.

So I brewed a cup of coffee, put Harry on mute, and sat down on my mat. Just sat at first. My brain was cloudy and I venture to say most of us have gone through (and might still be going through) this stage in adjusting. But that’s all it is, is an adjustment. Today I realized taking the time, my time, to work through and process all that has happened and is happening is necessary. What is the rush?? There isn’t one. And then something amazing happened, my body started moving. Naturally and slowly, the flow I needed began warming its way through my limbs… and it was effortless.

Our lives were spent rushing off to here and there, from one thing to the next. The Universe got so tired of it She literally shut the entire world down. Why are we still rushing?! Why am I?! I slowly worked through my asanas today and then slowly enjoyed my cup of coffee before starting my day today. And it felt GOOD. That’s what’s most important in times like these, and really should always be important, feeling good. If it doesn’t feel good, if it doesn’t make us feel better than before we did it, if we have to force it, why are we doing it?! Don’t force, flow instead.

If you are someone who is struggling or your anxiety is high or you’ve been getting down on yourself for just “being” instead of doing something “productive” with your days this message is for you: there is no rush. Take a moment and feel through your process. Whatever that may be. Feel it in order to heal it, it’s ok. And when you’re ready, move. Flow onto the next page of your process and continue flowing. It’s all going to be ok, and so are we.
